Turrkey Season Bass Fishing

As some of you may know, in addition to being a crazed fisherman, I am also something of a lunatic hunter. May 3rd was opening day for spring Turkey season in NH, and spring gobbler season being my favorite of all hunting seasons; I took a few days off to hunt. The thing with spring Turkey season is that unlike other seasons, the hunt must legally end at noon every day, in order for the birds to have some time to mate without being hammered all day. As such, the old man and I decided that after the hunt was over, we would head out to the lake each day to do some fishing. The results were fantastic. All together I caught six Bass, one of which was a new record for me (lengthwise anyway). Dad also caught a nice 17 inch slob, but unfortunately I was not able to snap a picture (Dad didn’t want cameras in the canoe). It’s only the fourth or so Bass he has ever caught, and damn was it a nice one!

New Record and Many More! Catch

  • # of Fish Caught: 5
  • Water Type: freshwater
  • Type of Fish: Largemouth Bass
  • Fish Length (Avg): 15.5 inches
  • Fish Length (Max): 18 inches
  • Fish Weight (Avg): 15 lbs. 8 oz.
  • Fish Weight (Max): 2 lbs. 4 oz.
  • Bait Type: Worm Check Prices
  • Bait Details: This matches my biggest largemouth in length, and probably in weight as well. The fish off of the damn were all caught on "Tequila Sunrise" colored power worms with a gold colored 3/16 oz. bullet weight. I also changed up the line to a lighter 6 lb. test, which may have helped.
  • Location Details: We fished up and down the concrete embankment of the Sawyer Lake damn over the course of several days. Dad got a few bites, but I was the one pulling in all the fish. On the first day some other guys showed up for about half an hour, and one of them got a nice two pounder. It was actually quite windy for the first few days, which may have actually helped by pushing all the baitfish schools down to this end of the lake.

Fish From the Canoe Catch

  • # of Fish Caught: 1
  • Water Type: freshwater
  • Type of Fish: Largemouth Bass
  • Fish Length (Avg): 16 inches
  • Fish Length (Max): 16 inches
  • Bait Type: Worm Check Prices
  • Bait Details: On the last day we headed out in the canoe and fished much of the shoreline. We had some bites, but the real action came when we headed over to the other end of the lake, my favorite spot. Here I immediately hooked into a nice two pounder while tossing around a big purple jelly worm, rigged the same way as most of my baits. Dad also finally got some much needed action over here as well. He hooked into one medium size bass early on, but it slipped off just as he brought it to boat side. He did manage to land a nice 17 inch 2.2 pounder however! Both of his fish were hooked on a small blue soft plastic crawdad lure.
  • Location Details: Unfortunately, there is no picture of any of the fish that came on the last day, as neither of us had any type of camera on us.
