Gilmanton NH Fishing Chronicles

As promised, I went back up to Gilmanton to do some more fishing this weekend. While the bass bite was not nearly as active as last weekend, I did manage to pull in a few decent Sawyer Lake bass, and a random Hornpout! The real story comes from this morning, when I headed back to Shellcamp pond expecting to tangle with some Chain Pickerel. While I never saw any Pickerel, I pulled in two bass, the second of which was the biggest bass of my life! I’m definitely adding Shellcamp to the rotation from now on!

Yellow Perch Catch

  • # of Fish Caught: 1
  • Water Type: freshwater
  • Type of Fish: Yellow Perch
  • Fish Length (Avg): 6 inches
  • Fish Length (Max): 6 inches
  • Bait Type: Worm Check Prices
  • Bait Details: While working my way up and down the damn, I would often keep my Jelly Worm in the water. On one occasion, this impromptu land-based trolling technique yielded a fish! Not much more than a tiny yellow perch.

Hornpout! Catch

  • # of Fish Caught: 1
  • Water Type: freshwater
  • Type of Fish: Brown Bullhead
  • Fish Length (Avg): 15 inches
  • Fish Length (Max): 15 inches
  • Bait Type: Worm Check Prices
  • Bait Details: As the sun fell on the first night, I was still playing around with a Texas rigged purple Jellyworm. While I was bouncing it along the bottom by the damn, I felt a solid bite. While I was reeling this "bass" in, I noticed that this particular fish was rolling. Odd, bass don't do that. I proceeded to pull up a 2 lb. hornpout! Odd to see one take a lure like that!

Sawyer Lake Bass Catch

  • # of Fish Caught: 8
  • Water Type: freshwater
  • Type of Fish: Largemouth Bass
  • Fish Length (Avg): 16 inches
  • Fish Length (Max): 17 inches
  • Fish Weight (Max): 2 lbs. 4 oz.
  • Bait Type: Worm Check Prices
  • Bait Details: I caught a total of eight bass over the three days at Sawyer Lake, one dink bass the first night, three decent ones the next, and four the night after. All fish were caught on my standard rig, the first few on Berkley Power Worms, the rest on Mann’s Jelly Worms. Dad was with me some nights, and caught two Bass himself.

Shellcamp Bass Catch

  • # of Fish Caught: 2
  • Water Type: freshwater
  • Type of Fish: Largemouth Bass
  • Fish Length (Avg): 17 inches
  • Fish Length (Max): 19 inches
  • Fish Weight (Avg): 2 lbs. 2 oz.
  • Fish Weight (Max): 3 lbs. 2 oz.
  • Bait Type: Worm Check Prices
  • Bait Details: The Bass pictured here is the biggest Bass of my life so far! 19 inches, almost enough to qualify for the NH catch and release trophy program. When I first hooked him, I thought I had bottom, until the bottom started pulling back!. A couple headshaking minutes later, and I pulled this beast into the kayak! I can't wait until next year for this fish to grow even more!
