First Bass Of The Year!

I have wanted to go down to the river for some pre spawn bass for a while now. After reading about Meat7gtk’s trip (and watching River Monsters all last night) I couldn’t take it anymore! I had to go down to the ol’ Chuck rain or shine. Thankfully, there was plenty of shine and Largemouth to be had! The first one I hooked into was actually a little 10 inch guy. I tried to land him, but my dang lure was caught in one of the trees! He shook himself of before I ever got the line free (or the lure back). When the jerk baits, jigs, and spinner didn’t work I went to an old standby, the Red Shad Power Worm! Six casts later I hooked into a nice fat bastard! I was going to release it, but ended up giving it to this Asian guy I met down there, I’m pretty sure it’s going to be his dinner tonight. Eh, whatever. A little charity never hurt anyone.

First Largemouth of the Season! Catch

  • # of Fish Caught: 1
  • Water Type: freshwater
  • Type of Fish: Largemouth Bass
  • Fish Length (Avg): 14.75 inches
  • Fish Weight (Avg): 2 lbs. 5 oz.
  • Fish Weight (Max): 2 lbs. 5 oz.
  • Bait Details: This is my first Bass of the year and my first fish this open water season. To hell with what the fishing magazines say, Red Shad power worms on cone weights work any time of the year! I've lost count of how many fish I have caught using this one setup.
  • Location Details: I had a bit more casting room this time as there are no lily pads this time of year. Still, I stuck to that one familiar spot. I ended up giving the fish to some Asian dude I met down there. I'm pretty sure he's gonna eat. Hey, it's his liver!
